Analyses of the orbital changes experienced by satellites at resonance have been carried out at the Royal Aircraft Establishment, Farnborough (now Defence Research Agency) and various universities for over 20 years and have provided a limited number of values of individual geopotential harmonic coefficients. This paper compares these values with corresponding ones from comprehensive Earth models produced by American and European agencies which evaluate all coefficients up to an arbitrary limit. Comparisons are made for harmonics of orders 14, 15, 16, 28, 29, 30 and 31. The satellite resonance values are found to be superior to those of the comprehensive models for orders 15 and 30, while some 14th-order values are as good. It is undetermined as to whether the limited number of values derived from resonance for orders 29 and 31 are as reliable as those from the models. It is concluded that the resonance values for orders 14, 15, 28 and 30 are accurate and consistent enough to serve as an independent standard for testing the comprehensive models and this assessment allows us to make confident estimates of the real accuracy of current values.
