The goals and hardware requirements of the Ulysses program to send a spacecraft to observe the poles of the Sun, are briefly described. Emphasis is given to the propulsion system of the Ulysses spcecraft which will use gravity assist maneuvers to escape the plane of the ecliptic and reach 85 degrees solar latitude. The communications payload of Ulysses consists of a High Gain Antenna (HGA) with a 1.65 m parabolic reflector, and two Low Gain Antennas (LGAS) one looking forward and the other looking aft. The downlink is via X-band (8 GHz, 20 W) or S band (2 GHz 5 W) transmitters which can be operated simulataneously. A summary of the scientific payload on board the Ulysses is given and a schematic diagram showing the instruments on board the spacecraft is provided.
