The authors have undertaken a sensitive search for H and K absorption arising of two spiral galaxies that are projected against background QSOs, using a blue-sensitive spectrograph attached to the Multiple Mirror Telescope. Despite good sensitivity (S/N ≡ 20) and high spectral resolution (1 Å), this search program produced a null result. In the best case, the authors can set an upper limit on the equivalent width of H and K absorption of 0.1 Å. A 21-cm search for a very extended halo around NGC 1300 was also negative, restricting H I emission column densities to <1020cm-2 at distances >50 kpc from the nucleus.
