The importance of detecting the 4430 Å diffuse absorption band in the Magellanic Clouds is discussed. Recent observations of the band in the spectra of reddened SMC stars are described. The albedo of the interstellar dust near 30 Doradûs is estimated by comparing ultraviolet extinction laws constructed from small- and large-aperture observations.
