It is shown how optical polarization mapping of star formation regions can provide evidence about the magnetic field distribution established within collapsing protostellar clouds. It is suggested that the morphology of bipolar nebulae associated with pre-main-sequence stars results from an interaction between outflowing material and the magnetic field and density distribution established within the surrounding cloud material during the formation of the star.
