Population I WR stars are believed to be the evolved He-burning descendants of initially more massive O-star progenitors in which mass loss has significantly affected the overall evolution, thereby revealing interior CNO-burning (WN stars) and He-burning (WC stars) products. This review outlines the current status of knowledge of WR stars and the uncertainties in basic WR parameters such as effective temperatures, radiative luminosities, masses, mass loss rates and chemical abundances, which have led to this evolutionary scenario.
