The effect of gravitational radiation reaction on the continuous spectrum of normal modes in a differentially rotating perfect fluid is considered for the first time. This is done by evaluating the criterion for secular stability for a specific case, for which the continuum is found not to give rise to a secular instability. The calculation highlights certain differences between discrete and continuum modes, as well as between the Eulerian and Lagrangian representations of the continuum modes.
