Hodographs of the interplanetary magnetic field vector B near the earth during 29 flare-induced geomagnetic disturbances are considered. It is found that B either rotates in one direction, oscillates, or moves chaotically. The chaotic component is also present in cases of regular rotation or oscillation. These features are taken as evidence for a closed or nearly closed magnetic-field geometry in the plasma ejected by flares. The chaotic component may be due to external forces causing local deformations of certain parts of the magnetic field line loops.
