Physical characteristics of the Tharsis region of Mars and models to explain their development are discussed. The Tharsis dome is 6000 km in diameter and 10-11 km in height. It is suggested that the tectonic structures of this region were the result of an extended period of volcanic activity which occurred due to the crust thinning and thermal flux elevation resulting from meteorite bombardments and differentiation. The general surface cooling and crustal thickening on Mars suggest a different evolutionary pattern than the global tectonic evolution of the earth.
