Data on the Martian atmosphere obtained by the Viking and Mariner probes, in addition to earth observations, are discussed. Results show the principal atmospheric constituents to be CO2 (95.3 percent), N2 (2.7 percent), A (1.6 percent), O2 (0.13 percent), CO (0.07 percent), and H2O (an average of about 0.03 percent). Consequences of the optical thinness of the atmosphere to the penetration of solar UV radiation are discussed, and mechanisms to account for the high CO2 abundance are considered. It is suggested that primordial abundances of CO2, H2O, and N2 may have been similar on Mars, Venus and earth, and that the present differences in their atmospheres are due to the differences in surface temperature and planetary size.
