Several scientific problems are briefly addressed in order to illustrate areas in astronomy where observations with the IUE satellite have been particularly fruitful. The discussions include UV spectroscopy of comets, hot early-type stars, cool late-type stars, stars in advanced evolutionary stages (including planetary nebulae observations), and the unique opportunity presented for studying the interstellar medium at the distance of the Large Magellanic Cloud using SN1987A as a background light source. It is pointed out that the observations of SN1987A by IUE underscore the long functional lifetime of the satellite, which has far exceeded its original design life.
