A possible mechanism for the penetration of a cometary atmosphere by a
magnetic field is presented. The mechanism is based on the known pattern
of solar wind propagation through a cometary ionosphere. It is shown
through a series of calculations that the penetrating field has a
braided configuration and can reach a velocity of 100,000 cm/s.
