An overview is given of some important, early results from the
observations of Supernova 1987A in the Large Magellanic Cloud. These
include the identification of the precursor star, the (so far
unsuccessful) search for a new-born pulsar, the discovery of a new
supernova class, and the detection and study of intergalactic clouds.
