A search has been conducted for short duration flashes of light from the sky over a wide field of view. As no celestial flashes were found, a 3 sigma upper limit is placed on the flash rate of 219, 54, 31, 24, and 22 flashes per hour per steradian for flashes with a 1 s duration and with magnitudes brighter than 14, 13, 12, 11, and 10 mag respectively. The search technique consisted of simultaneously photographing an area of sky with two widely separated Schmidt cameras. This arrangement makes it possible to eliminate local 'flash' sources. The photographs were slightly trailed during each exposure so that the untrailed image of a short duration flash would be prominent. The study can be used to place the probabilities of 0.00009, 0.00002, and 2 x 10 to the -10th that the three flashes of Schaefer et al. were caused by background celestial flashes, local celestial flashes or photographic defects respectively.
