The author discusses the size of the period variations currently observed for the W UMa and RS CVn type eclipsing binaries. From a theoretical discussion, taking into account the different modes of mass loss and angular momentum loss, he concludes that it is impossible to believe these mechanisms responsible for all the period variations observed. On the basis of recent results of solar research he proposes an alternative mechanism using matter flows in the radiative core of these synchronously rotating binary components.
