According to (quasi-) static model calculations of the outer layers of a neutron star, subject to a thermonuclear flash, the maximum luminosity cannot exceed the Eddington limit by more than a few percent. Yet, maximum burst luminosities substantially in excess of the Eddington limit have been observed for many X-ray bursts. In this paper the authors suggest a possible solution to this "Eddington limit problem", related to the transformation properties of the radiation field, as measured in the rest frame and in a comoving frame.
