The Horsehead has been studied at optical and near-infrared wavelengths, and has been found to be an active site of low-mass star formation. In particular, deep CCD images have revealed a shock-excited collimated flow-region emanating from an infrared source. Several other nebulous regions are discussed. The Horsehead is a cloud core, which is presently emerging from its parental cloud due to the destructive influence of the nearby OB-system σ Orionis. The onset of low-mass star formation is discussed in this context.
