Integrated far-UV to visible broad-band photometry of spiral galaxies is used to analyze the history of star formation as a function of Hubble type. The observational data is first analyzed and the internal reddening problem is considered. It is suggested that the internal color excess may vary from one stellar population to another, and the consequences of such variation on the estimation of extinction are addressed. The main results of evolutionary synthetic population models are reviewed, and it is shown how the observed colors can be used to put some constraints on the R, E(i), (B-V) values. It is demonstrated that the integrated past star formation rate (SFR) can be obtained in spite of the uncertainty in the internal reddening estimation. It is found that the ratio of the neutral hydrogen mass to this integrated past SFR is related to the Hubble type of the galaxies.
