The formation of the magnetic cavity around Comet Halley is studied in a nonstationary quasi one-dimensional fluid model. Characteristic features of spatial density, velocity, and magnetic field profiles observed by Giotto can be reproduced. The same model is also used to simulate the AMPTE Li release in the solar wind where the characteristic dimensions are smaller than the ion gyro radii. In spite of the expected limited applicability of the one-fluid model, quantitative agreement for magnetic field and plasma density variations is found.
