Sharp spectral features due to hydrogen dimers accompanying the pure rotational So(0) and So(1) transitions of H2 at 28 and 17 microns in the far-infrared have been observed in the laboratory for the first time, using a long absorption path (154m) of H2 at low temperature (77K). This observation confirms the assignment to (H2)2 of features observed in spectra of Jupiter and Saturn obtained by the Voyager spacecraft. Recent calculations of the relevant spectrum are generally supported, but refinements in the theory may be required. The importance of including pressure-broadening effects in spectral simulations is emphasized.
