Morphological and surface photometric studies of quasars are reviewed. The determination that quasars reside in the cores of elliptical galaxies is described, and the attempt to use quasars to decide between an open and a closed universe is recounted. The relationship of quasars to galactic clusters is discussed, and the black hole as a possible source of the quasar's energy is considered.
