Scientific paper

The nucleus of comet P/Halley as a tri-axial, rigid and torque-free rotating body is discussed, especially the effects of a possible nutation of the rotation axis. It is found that the apparently randomly occurring outbursts observed in the light curve at large heliocentric distances may in reality be caused by the combined effects of rotation, precession and nutation. It is also found that this model predicts complex gas production curves not in agreement with those obtained by some authors.
