The phenomena known for Her X-1 seem best explained by precession of magnetic vortex tubes (MVTs). A pinched MVT affords a mechanism for accelerating charges to the maximum observed cosmic ray energies. In particular, the 1016eV particles required to generate ultrahigh energy γ-rays can be produced. Radiation pulses are generated when electron bunches encounter a transverse magnetic field, explaining the 1.24 s pulses of X-ray flux from Her X-1. The periodic Doppler shift in the arrival times of the pulses indicates circular motion of the X-ray source, but motion of a source located in a precessing MVT rather than motion in a binary system. The X-ray eclipses, with period 1.7 d, are by an object of diameter at least 6 R_sun;, unless the emission is beamed. The outer 40% of this object is transparent to TeV γ-rays. A possibility is a corona around HZ Her, with electron density ≅1013cm-3. The 35 d high-low cycle is probably caused by variable obscuration of the X-ray source. There is reason to attribute the obscuration to differential rotation between source and structured gas.
