An attempt is made to verify the astronomical reality of the optical flashes reported by Katz et al. (1986). Archival meteor patrol photographs from the MORP (Meteorite Observation and Recovery Project) network show no images that agree in time and position with the events listed by Katz et al., including the photographed flash of March 19, 1985. The flashes are thus probably of local origin.
