The authors present radio continuum observations of IC 342 obtained with the Effelsberg 100-m radio telescope at λ6.3 cm and λ11.1 cm both in total intensity and linear polarization. The average degree of polarization of IC 342 is 13±2% at λ6.3 cm and 10±2% at λ11.1 cm. The average strengths of the total and uniform magnetic field are 7±2 and 3±1 μG on the scale of resolution of ≡2 kpc. The distribution of rotation measures and the orientation of the magnetic field components in the sky plane show that the field structure in IC 342 follows the spiral arms. The magnetic field direction is symmetric to the rotation axis in all regions of the galaxy. IC 342 is therefore the first clear case of an axisymmetric spiral field. The ground mode of an αω-dynamo is capable of generating such a field structure.
