The Guide Star Photometric Catalog consists of a set of ˜104 stars distributed nearly uniformly over the Galaxy and over the V-magnitude range from 9 to 15; as the selection was made without regard to the stellar colors, these objects are a random sample of the Galactic color distribution. The distribution shows a blue-yellow component consisting primarily of disk dwarfs. In addition, various subsets of the distribution (organized by magnitude and direction) are bimodal, with a second, redder peak consisting primarily of disk giants. (The halo stars do not significantly populate this magnitude range.) At low and intermediate Galactic latitudes, the small differences (≍ 0.1 mag) in average color which exist with respect to apparently symmetric Galactic positions may be attributed to reddening in the Gould belt. The distributions are in approximate agreement with the "standard" Bahcall-Soneira galactic model. However, for some directions, the relative strengths of the red and blue peaks differ somewhat between the model with standard parameters and the data; possible adjustments to the model are discussed.
