The authors describe a model in which the expansion of the radio-emitting components in Seyfert 2 nuclei compresses and accelerates the ambient medium by means of shockwaves. When the expansion velocity of the component has decreased to ≡400 km s-1, the compressed gas cools and has the properties attributed to the forbidden-line region. This readily accounts for the intimate relationship between the radio continuum emission and the forbidden-line region.
