The magnetic field behind a mildly relativistic shock is calculated using the electrodynamic properties of the shock. The authors present a heuristic argument showing that the field is close to equipartition with the kinetic energy of the incoming flow. The result is similar to results obtained with detailed simulations of solar system shocks. The electric field present in the shock accelerates some electrons to relativistic energies. The spectral parameters of the synchrotron radiation resulting from the interaction of the relativistic electrons with the magnetic field is related to the shock density and the inflow velocity. It is shown that it is possible to accelerate electrons to gamma factors of about 102- 103. These electrons are the natural candidates for the source of the synchrotron emission which is observed in the mm-infrared spectral domain of active galactic nuclei.
