Results of UV monitoring by IUE of the recurrent nova RS Oph during the first 3 months after its outburst (Jan 1985) are reported, and compared with UV spectra at quiescence. The object is rather heavily reddened. Its distance is estimated as 1.3 Kpc. The decline phase is characterized by an increase of the degree of ionization and by a decrease of the electron density in the ejecta. Forbidden emission lines from FeXI and FeXII are detected in the IUE spectra taken in the later stages of the decline. High resolution IUE spectra show complicated emission line profiles, potentially important to study the dynamics of the ejection and the geometry of the system.
