The superoutburst phenomenon of dwarf novae is discussed. The SU UMa subclass of dwarf novae exhibit normal outbursts and superoutbursts (duration 2 and 12 days respectively). The principal characteristic of superoutbursts is the presence of superhumps at a period 3% to 7% longer than P orb. Although generally agreed that superoutbursts are the result of an extended period of enhanced accretion, the location of the superhump light source and the mechanism of its formation is a matter of controversy. Photometric data for the eclipsing system Z Cha indicate that the superhump must either reside on the red component as a form of superspot or be an extended region of the accretion disk. Results from spectroscopy during the May 1984 Z Cha superoutburst allow both interpretations. It is shown the general appearance of the superhump can be explained by periodic mass transfer variations which would be expected in the eccentric binary model.
