Consideration is given to the principal questions concerning the process of star formation. Among the questions discussed are: the connection between the chemical composition of a star-forming molecular cloud and the initial mass functions of the product stars; the preferred length scales of star-forming molecular clouds; and the problem of calculating the age of molecular clouds which are about to produce stars. Consideration is also given to the specific physical mechanisms of star formation in molecular clouds, including shock waves, spiral density waves, the expansion of supernova remnants, and cloud-cloud collisions. Astronomical observations of pre-main sequence stars are reviewed.
