The present status of cosmic inflation scenario is discussed in a nontechnical style. Consideration is given to the principal theoretical requirements of realistic inflationary models including: exponential expansion of the cosmic scale factor R in the very early universe; the origin of large-scale homogeneity and small-scale inhomogeneities in the shape of the universe; and the origin of the flatness of the universe today. The connection between inflation and quantum gravity is examined with respect to three inflationary scenarios: the 'old' inflation scenario, the 'new' inflation scenario, and the primordial inflation scenario.
