The physical conditions found in HII galaxies has profound implications on several topics, such as star formation and its possible sequential propagation in HII galaxies, and how the ISM is structured in these galaxies. Central in this field of research is the validity and interpretation of the empirical correlations of size and luminosity versus their supersonic line widths for high redshift galaxies. A fine calibration of these relations for local HII galaxies may be of great importance if used as a distance indicator of galaxies at high redshift, since HII galaxies are easy to find at great distances. In a recent paper (Telles, Muñoz-Tuñón & Tenorio-Tagle, 2001) was shown that: (i) enhanced spectral and spatial resolution seems to unveil an intricate structure in HII galaxies. (ii) HII galaxies when resolved, present several emitting knots with a variety of shapes, luminosity and sigma values. (iii) The intrinsic properties (luminosity, velocity dispersion) of a galaxy are dominated by the central(core) component. These results were the motivations to observe HII galaxies using FEROS spectrograph(ESO) which has high resolution(R = 48000) and high efficiency. Here we present our most recent calibration of the [L-s] relation from a homogeneous sample of about one hundred local HII galaxies, using line widths measures from FEROS data. The integrated flux for Ha, Hb and [OIII](ll 4959, 5007), O/H ratio and equivalent widths were obtained from a spectrophotometric catalog of HII galaxies built from Boller & Chivens(ESO) data(Telles, Cuisinier & Kehrig in preparation). We are also studying the behavior of the relation for different emission lines and investigating the existence of a second parameter, such as metallicity and equivalent width. These new calibrations show a significant improvement in the accuracy in which distances can be derived due to the high quality of our data. We'll show that our calibration is consistent with previous works, confirming the validity of relation [L - s4] for HII galaxies.
