As part of the Brazilian collaboration on the 4.2m SOAR telescope second generation instruments, a multi-institutional team is designing a Echelle Spectrograph with UV capability (STELES). The proposed spectrograph will be a two channel cross-dispersed echelle fed by the SOAR Nasmith focus. It will work on a quasi-Littrow configuration with white pupil, covering the spectral region from 3000 to 8800 Å(in one shot) at R = 50,000 (with a 1 arcsec slit - or, up to R = 70,000 with narrow slit or image slicer). Overall instrument efficiency is intended to peak at 25% in 6500 Åand 10% in 3200 Å. The optical design of STELES includes all recent developments in echelle design and is innovative in the solution for the crossdispersing, where holographic gratings will be used for the first time. This solution (developed by B. Delabre) represents an increasing of efficiency over the traditional solution reflection gratings, besides turning the spectrograph smaller and cheaper. Other positive impacts of this choice on the design are: the reduction (by half) of the cameras lens diameter and the possibility of using spherical mirrors for the collimators. We present the spectrograph conceptual design, with emphasis on the new developments on the optical design and the image quality achieved with this new design. We discuss briefly also the mechanical design, the electronics and control system, the data reduction software planed for the spectrograph and the schedule for the funding and construction.
