Black Holes (BHs) are characterized by their charge, angular momentum, and mass. It has been frequently suggested that energy could be extracted from a charged or spinning BH to create the large luminosities that are observed in active galactic nuclei, quasars, and gamma ray bursts. It is shown that these scenarios suggested in the literature for energy extraction of a BH are inviable.
