The characteristics of infrared sources associated with regions of star formation are investigated on the basis of a constructed model of the evolution of the gas-dust shells around massive stars that are forming. The observational criteria enabling one to determine the structure and parameters of a source are singled out and an evolutionary classification of compact infrared objects is proposed.
