Scientific paper

The authors have established that in the cluster A 496 they can clearly
distinguish between two populations of galaxies: the first which
dominates the core of the cluster and is characterised by elliptical and
lenticular galaxies and the second composed by fainter galaxies. This is
the first robust result of a composite luminosity function.
