In order to determine the space density of polar-ring galaxies (PRGs), we have estimated the B-band luminosity function of galaxies in the range of absolute magnitudes (M(B)) from -17.5 to -21.5. It was shown that this luminosity function can be approximated by the Schechter function with parameters close to the values for field galaxies (besides the normalisation): alpha=-1.27, M*(B)=-19.84, and phi*=1.1×10^{-5} Mpc^{-3}. We find that about 0.001 of all nearby galaxies appear to have polar rings. Polar-ring galaxies with early-type hosts are about 3 times more numerous per unit of space than galaxies with spiral hosts.
We predict that about 20-30 galaxies with large-scale "face-on" polar structures must exist among relatively bright (B<15 mag) galaxies. Such objects are not discovered still. Probably, they will look like barred galaxies with extended low surface brightness rings or disks.
