Cross sections for the excitation of transitions in the tantalum atom not related to the ground state have been measured using extended crossed beams and optical spectroscopy. The total excitation cross sections for 23 energy levels of TaI have been determined. The accuracy of known transition probabilities that can be used to find branching ratios is analyzed.
