We propose to observe 5 compact radio galaxies with a symmetric morphology to put on a firm statistical basis a recently discovered anti-correlation between the radio structure size and the X-ray column density. Our first goal is to establish whether this anti-correlation is due to the X-ray emission probing a kpc-scale density gradient of the nuclear ambient gas, or to the gaseous nuclear environment somehow controlling the size (and hence determining the evolution) of infant radio jets. In the former scenario, our finding offers a unique opportunity to directly probe the distribution of the gas surrounding "young" black holes; in the latter, it will represent the first evidence that the evolution of young radio sources is driven primarily by the distribution of cold ambient nuclear gas.
