The possible roles of dark matter and strings in the formation of the large-scale structure of the universe are discussed. Recent findings on the structure of the universe are reviewed, including the network of bubbles, filaments, and voids apparent in a recently published 'slice of the universe' as well as the large-scale streaming motion. The biased cold dark matter model of galaxy formation is discussed, giving its advantages and drawbacks. A model of galaxy formation by cosmic strings is described.
