Some developments in British IR astronomy from 1960-1985 are reviewed. The radiation and atmospheric problems of IR astronomy, and techniques developed to counter these problems are described. The formation of a 60-in. flux collector and a 120-in. telescope, and the use of Fourier transform spectrometers are discussed. The use of photometric and spectral data in the analysis of atmospheric phenomena is examined. Consideration is given to the experiments concerned with: the measurement of 3K background radiation wavelengths around and on the short wavelength side of the peak; the absolute measurement of the flux from Vega at 2.0 and 3.8 microns by comparison with a furnace; and the all-sky survey in four IR bands at wavelengths between 10-100 microns (IRAS project).
