Examined from a theoretical standpoint is the solar transition region which separates the hot, diffuse corona from the cool, dense chromosphere. The purpose of the thesis is to provide a detailed and fairly complete description of the transition region and the shortcomings of the theory of this region as known. For our purposes we define the transition region to be a region extending in temperature from 10,000 approx = or less than T approx = or less than 1,000,000 deg K. Based upon the observations, the authors find the transition region to be subdivided into a lower T approx = or less than 100,000 deg and upper (T approx = or less than 100,000 deg K) transition region. As we will discover, the theory for the transition region seems to be most inadequate in the lower transition region.
