Mechanisms for formation and destruction of carbon sulfide (CS) molecules in SN 1987A are explored, and a chemistry model of CS is advanced. Partly because of the slow formation of CS due to the low degree of microscopic mixing of carbon and sulfur in the ejecta and mainly because of the rapid destruction of CS by the abundant neutral oxygen, the chemistry predicts a low mass of CS of the order of 10-11 M&sun; in the supernova. If the 3.88 mu m feature in the late-time infrared spectra of SN 1987A is indeed due to the first overtone emission of CS, the vibrational v = 2 level of CS in the supernova may be populated more efficiently by Br alpha pumping than by thermal electron impact.
