Deep U, J, and F plates taken with the Canada-France-Hawaii telescope have been analyzed. The plates have been digitized and analyzed with automated software. A multicolor search for quasar candidates and to obtain star counts as a function of color is conducted, and it is shown that a nuclear-versus-total magnitude diagram is a powerful statistical tool useful to differentiate between stars and galaxies. It is found that the U-F less than 0.0 criterion is superior to the UV excess criterion at discriminating against compact blue galaxies. Combining the separation diagram with colors is probably (with the exception of spectroscopic follow-up) the most powerful means of separating bona fide quasar candidates from color-excess emission-line galaxies. The present quasar-candidate counts agree well with most other similar surveys. This field is at a low galactic latitude (b exp II = +37 deg 42 min) and in the direction of the anticenter (l exp II = 196 deg 48 min), yet shows a color distribution intermediate between SA 57 (near the North Galactic Pole) and SA 68 (l = 111 deg and b = -46 deg), indicating less contribution from the disk. This can be used to create models of the galaxy. The present database is available upon request.
