We present a 1.6mu m HST/NICMOS camera 2 image of the low-ionization Broad Absorption Line QSO (BALQSO) PG1700+518. This relatively nearby (z = 0.292) object is one of the most infrared luminous (radio-quiet) QSOs known [log(L_IR/Lsun) = 12.12: Low et al. 1988, ApJ, 327, L41]. Previous ground-based images show an associated arc-like feature located ~ 2.5arcsec NE from the bright point-source (Hutchings, Neff & Gower 1992, PASP, 104, 62), with an ``E+A'' optical spectrum indicative of an old population of stars plus a 9 (+/- 4)x 10(7) year old starburst (Canalizo & Stockton 1997, ApJ, 480, L5). However, the origin of this structure (companion galaxy or tidal tail) can not be discerned from the ground-based images. Our 0.076arcsec /pixel NICMOS image clearly resolves the arc-like feature into a central condensation surrounded by a bright ring, reminiscent of a ring galaxy. Subtraction of a scaled psf-star from PG1700+518 reveals diffuse emission underlying the bright QSO point-source and extending ~ 2arcsec SW. The overall morphology of the PG1700+518 system is very similar to that of the IRAS-discovered, infrared luminous QSO (IRAS 04505-2958: Low et al. 1988; Boyce et al. 1996, ApJ, 473, 760), and suggests a near head-on collision between the PG1700+518 and its companion. The relative velocity between the QSO and the companion ( ~ 140 km s(-1) ) implies that the collision occurred ~ 5x 10(7) years ago, consistent with the inferred age of the starburst.
