On the basis of the concept that the southward component of the IMF and/or the negative gradient of the vertical component of the IMF are the dominating parameters in the generation of magnetic substorms, various aspects of polar cap magnetic activity are examined for the purpose of revealing effective signatures of the growth phase of magnetic substorms and to define suitable indices. One result of the study is the emergence of an index of the polar cap magnetic activity defined as the 15-min sum of values of the polar cap magnetic disturbances with regard to the southward components, with variability of these disturbances taken into account.
