Educational outreach programs of the National Optical Astronomy Observatories will be summarized, in particular ``The Use of Astronomy in Research Based Science Education (RBSE)", a NSF-funded Teacher Enhancement Program which began in the summer of 1997. This program offers a research experience to middle and high school teachers during summer workshops and helps extend the experience to their classrooms during the academic year. Participants observe with telescopes on Kitt Peak, learn image analysis techniques through Image Processing for Teaching workshops, develop strategies for teaching a research-based science course and receive astronomy content instruction necessary to understand the pre-selected datasets investigated during the summer program. Academic year followup includes mentoring opportunities with astronomers drawn from the national user base of NOAO facilities and technical support from NOAO Educational Outreach. This presentation will describe results of our Pilot Test Study run in the summer of 1997 and plans for future years. Different models for bringing research into the classroom will be described as will opportunities for astronomers interested in being local mentors to participating teachers.
