A simple analytical model is developed for the instantaneous effect of a wave train on spectral lines of arbitrary strength and shape. The most important proviso of this model is that the velocity disturbance must be small in comparison with the thermal Doppler line width. The model is used to investigate the diagnostic value of various methods of spectral-line analysis.
