The 21 cm spatially integrated neutral hydrogen line profile observed in nearby galaxies contains significant information about the distribution of neutral hydrogen. It is shown, for a standard model of galactic structure (azimuthally symmetric, thin disk), that the neutral hydrogen distribution as a function of rotation velocity can be calculated directly from either the spectral line shape or the corresponding autocorrelation function.
